Will you be mine?

I said Yes!

Black Hole of Nostalgia

  • Apr. 29th, 2007 at 9:56 PM

I just got back from Michigan as I was attending a baby shower for my sister (just a little over five weeks left and I'll be an aunt- whee!!!)

My Mom is in complete Grandma mode and has been digging out all the old books my sister and I loved as kids. She asked me to sort through two BIG boxes (apparently there are two more in our basement) and establish what books were mine verus what books belonged to Christina.

When I came across THIS one, I knew it was mine. Its nice to know that in between the Berenstein Bears and Richard Scary, I also had a Star Wars Pop Up book to look at (in really good condtion, I might add).

Yes, its here with me in Chicago. And no, I didn't read it on the plane :)

The book paired well with my Princess Leia Under Roos.

My geekiness came at an early age! Yahoo!

I haven't posted in a while and I am way overdue. Sorry! Just a few ramblings before I am off to bed--

Zelda
I have invested four months of my life into Wind Waker and I am almost done (WOO-HOO!) Of course, according to the walk through I have three versions of the same wizard boss to fight (a puppet, a spider, and a snake)  and then a final duel with the wizard. When I have won all four fights, I am done. I must admit, I'll be a little sad when its over, but smiling at my accomplishment.
That being said, if anyone has any suggestions for other Game Cube Games I should check out, I'm all ears (especially if there are any other Zelda games available).

New Niece or Nephew
Shouldn't be too long before I become "Auntie Liz." My sister is due at the end of May/beginning of June. Can't wait to be the "cool" aunt--spoil the little darling rotten with books and as he or she gets older, perhaps some video games? I've also been thinking about all of the books I enjoyed as a little kid...here are just a few:

Babar
Curious George (especially Curious George Gets a Job)
Anything by Richard Scary
The Bernstein Bears
It'll All Come Out In The Wash (by Nigel Gray)
The Snowy Day  (Ezra Jack Keats)

Weather
I am ready for some 50s or 60s. Please.

Shiver Me Timbers

  • Mar. 19th, 2007 at 9:03 PM

While eating dinner and couch surfing with my trusty remote, I came across Dancing With the Stars. Mind you, I don't watch this show. I watch some reality TV, but this isn't on the list. I am more of a Beauty and the Geek, America's Next Top Model type gal, but that gets off topic. The show took a commercial break and I saw a preview for the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I saw the first two movies and after seeing this particular preview, I am in. I do like Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom isn't too hard on the eyes, but what really piqued my interest: Chow Yun Fat. He's in it as Captain Sao Feng who leads a gang of supernatural pirates (I found this out with the help of Wikipedia, along with the movie poster below).

Mike and I recently watched Hardboiled (AWESOME), so I am excited to see more movies like it (and hopefully with Chow Yun Fat!) Hard Boiled was great in every sense of the word-- the action was over the top, the shots were incredible, the opening shot in the tea house made my jay drop, and the hospital scenes were really cool (in particuar those involving the nursery..what can I say? adorable babies..of course, you can't forget about the fires, bombs, etc). This is a one hell of a film.

shuffle me silly

  • Mar. 16th, 2007 at 5:22 PM

I have been listening to my iPod on shuffle all day today. I love doing this because I end up getting the most intriguing mix and hearing songs that haven't been in rotation for a LONG time. For example, in the last five minutes I've heard:
American Car (Mike Doughty)
The Lonley Bull (Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass)
Gone (U2)
I Would Be Your Man (The Odds)

It is the little things in life.

Rambling

  • Mar. 15th, 2007 at 10:47 PM

It has been a long time since I have posted on LJ. I've read so many good posts lately that I had to join in the fun. First things first:
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO JASON AND SHAN SHAN!! I am 99.9% positive that it is this weekend, right? Here's to  many more years of love, good times, and Lego Star Wars :) Afterall, nothing says lovin' like an At-At. Seriously though, you are both wonderful.

Just a few things that have been keeping me busy:
a.) Work (still love the job, just really, really busy)

b.) Music!!
So much good stuff is out there right now. In particular, Amy Winehouse has piqued my interest. I recently downloaded her new CD from iTunes and it is awesome. This gal has some pipes. Think MoTown. Think amazing. I've also been listening to tATu. You might be thinking, "Wait, isn't that the Russian Lesbian pop duo? Didn't they go all crazy on the MTV Music awards awhile back" Yup, this be them. I forgot how addictive dancy pop can be, especially on the 2005 CD Dangerous and Moving (thank you, RSM, what a great surprise, along with Fables!!). Lastly, I also have been exploring the band Apostles of Hustle--National Anthem of Nowhere is a great song and the rest of the CD seems like it has potential.

c.) Zelda
(Still plugging away at Wind Waker, but loving every minute of it

d.) 1001 Nights of Snowfall. Great graphic novel. It is a prequel to the Fables series. So far, so good, so great. Looks like I have a new series to read and enjoy along with Alias and Fell.

Snow Day!

  • Feb. 13th, 2007 at 2:52 PM

Per the National Weather Service:
... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight CST
tonight...

Snow will continue to intensify through the afternoon. As of late
this morning... reports indicated 2 to 4 inches of snow had fallen
across the area. An additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected
this afternoon and evening... resulting in storm total snowfall of
4 to 8 inches. The snow will decrease in intensity late this
evening. Snow combined with northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph along
with higher gusts will produce considerable blowing and drifting
snow and dangerous travel conditions.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow...
sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also
possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
Stay indoors and avoid travel if possible.

For the first time in my professional life, bad weather sent me packing. At 1pm, my boss came to me and said, "If you want to leave after 1, feel free. We can go early because of the weather." And so, here I am, two hours later sitting at my computer in my apartment watching the snow pile up outside. From the looks of it, very few streets are plowed and cars are moving slowly at all of the major intersections (both on the North side where I live and down town by my office). I have a feeling rush hour is going to be nasty. Weather.com has a good chunk of Illinois under a storm warning. I can't help but feel like a little kid--what will I do for the rest of the day??  That's easy. A few words for you: Zelda on the Game Cube.

What do you get when you cross NPR's "The Story," artist Anna Schuleit, the former Massachusetts Mental Hospital, and flowers from around the world?

You get this and this. Check it out, trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Out with the Old...In With the New

  • Dec. 31st, 2006 at 4:33 PM

With a few hours to go before the clock strikes Midnight and I raise a glass of bubbly to celebrate, I wanted to take a moment and look back on 2006. For me, it was a good year. It was a year filled with many AWESOME firsts (I won't bore you with everything, so here's a few and in no particular order):

ComiCon
Portland, OR for a wedding and getting a chance to see Galen and Mike's friends from Dark Horse
Going to California with Mike to help celebrate Jason and Shan Shan's big day.
Seeing BSG and loving every second of it
Meeting and making new, awesome, wonderful friends (Jaime [our comedic actress and editorial assistant at the old office] Chad, Jason, Galen, Shan Shan, Steve, Elizabeth, Robson, Chris, and Pete just to name a few)
RPG with the Brimstone Boys
Meeting RSM's family and vice versa
Realizing how lucky I am to have so many good things in my life (friends, family, good job, etc.)

I hope everyone out there stops and takes a moment to be thankful for all the good times and good memories that 2006 brought and (hopefully) the even better experiences 2007 will bring.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Monkey Business

  • Dec. 19th, 2006 at 7:06 PM

My Mom sent me this clip from the Detroit Free Press and I was able to find the picture online. What a dress! I am curious to know  how long it took to make. The artist created it as part of an UnProm event at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Props to the artist, since it is quite an original idea.Perhaps I should have tried to find a little number like this for RSM's Christmas Party?

sockmonkeydress.jpg

It certainly has been an eventful few weeks in the House of Dudek.

Thanksgiving weekend in Michigan ended up being a lot fun, and as an added bonus RSM came to Michigan with me to eat some turkey, sleep in, hang out with the rest of the clan, and veg out. Highlights included

a.) Casino Royale with my Mom and RSM (Holy Shit, what a great film! I looked at Mike and actually said "He (Bond) got the beat crapped out of him" (talking about the infamous chair scene..) I actually meant to say "He got the crap beat out of him, but obviously my brain was on hyper drive or I was still in movie shock at how frakin' awesome the film was.
b.) Driving! For those of you out there who know me--I don't drive, I don't drive often, and I am only a so-so driver because of this. Boy, did I get practice! And in my Mom's new Jeep too. FYI, the car is still in tact.

c.) Noshing on my Grandmother's kick ass stuffing.

I also had a rather large life-changing event: a new job! After Dec. 26, I will be working for the American Medical Association. Nervous and excited but certainly for the best on all levels: more responsibility, new environment, excellent benefits/pay. Good by real estate, hello medicine. If anyone wants a Physician's Desk Reference, I'll do my best to snag one.

Also off to Portland, OR for a wedding this weekend. yee haw! :-)

Nov. 19th, 2006

I saw these on You Tube. Thought I'd post....talk about chaos with the PS3.. Yikes. The little kid on You Tube is adorable, but you have to go to the site to see it.

Birthday weekend was fabulous. 28 isn't too shabby at this point, I must admit. I had a feeling the weekend would be a good one when I went out with some friends from work to the Gold Star Bar and toasted the evening with a $2.00 Miller High Life, while eating a homemade chicken tamale sold to me by a guy hawking his wares out of an igloo cooler, and listening to The Pixies "River Euphrates" on the jukebox. Dinner with RSM on my birthday was the highlight of the weekend!! Wonderful company and yummy food, what more can a woman ask for on her birthday? Getting to the restaurant was a little challenging due to a parade clogging up a good part of Michigan Avenue, causing most roads around the Magnificent Mile to be complete chaos (of course the 'Traffic Management Authority' did a bang up job directing traffic..NOT).

All in all, 28 is shaping up to be a good age :-)

A new look to the living room

  • Oct. 15th, 2006 at 4:04 PM

Despite HORRIBLE traffic getting back to the city on our way home, RSM and I took a drive out to Schaumberg. We hit various places including IKEA and I finally purchased a new couch cover for the Klippan sofa and purchased a Lack coffee table (not to mention a nifty desk light for the office). It looks great--now to just have people over to show it off. And for those of you wondering, yes, that IS a Game Cube in the corner of the screen :o)

Darshan

  • Oct. 8th, 2006 at 4:43 PM

I just got back from seeing a film called Darshan by Jan Kounen. This a documentary that follows Amma, an Indian woman from Kerala who embraces the true meaning of love and selfless service to others. Amma has been recognized by the United Nations as a humanitarian and is a recepient of the Ghandi-King Award for Non-violence. Amma has opened hosptials, schools, hospices, disaster relief programs, free homes for the poor and the needy, medical camps, orpheneges, and the list goes on. Her soul mission in life is to simply love others and serve others. One such way to show this love is through darshan. To date, she has embraced 25 million people. I am very lucky since I have experienced such an embrace. People flock to her in droves. It is an amazing film.

Frito Love and other commericals

  • Oct. 5th, 2006 at 9:08 PM

Riddle me this: How does a bag of Chili Cheese Fritos spark a 20 minute conversation about popular toys from the 80's? God only knows. What I DO know:  the Fritos were mine and purchased out of a moment of weakness. Yes, folks, I admit it. I love me some Chili Cheese Fritos. Even better, I found the commerical from the 80's on You Tube (yet another reason why this web site RAWKS). The quality is a little iffy, but the message gets the point across.

The search for this memorable 80's commerical actually got me searching what other tidbits from my adolescent TV viewing were out on You Tube. Here are some I remember...

The last two are devoted to She-Ra and He-Man (yes, I had She-Ra dolls back in the day). The first is a video, listen to the lyrics and you may forget that they were brother and sister. The last is a PSA (all cartoons in the 80's had some sort of PSA).

  • 10:01 PM

It's a quiet evening.. not much is new with me. Just thought I'd post a few things:

a.) The below video is from a band by the name of Halou. I came across this video while watching Good Morning America.  GMA now features a weekly You Tube Video that is deemed cool during the "Water Cooler" segement (not quite sure how I feel about this just yet). Searched this out on You Tube because 30 seconds on a morning news show just wasn't enough to satisfy my curiousity. Quite amazing detail.

b.) After two years of being out of commission, I am a proud owner of repaired Doc Martens. It is a sentimental attachment, but the shoes were lovingly worn all through college to many a small indie rock show in a crowded bar that served watery beer. I wore the shoes so much that the elastic holding the buckles together shredded, but they are broken in to a point where they are comfortable as hell.

c. Pandora Internet radio is addictive. I listen to it all the time at work when I get bored with iTunes. Check it out. It is coming on recommendation from RSM.

The Last Knit

I saw this on You Tube this evening and thought it was some clever animation. If the link doesn't work, search for "The Last Knit."

Jason Statham

  • Sep. 24th, 2006 at 9:43 PM

Saw Crank last night and liked it. If you check your brain at the door, know that this movie is purely action for action's sake, and you really dig Jason Statham, see it. Not to mention the web site for the film is rather entertaining. This film will take you on a roller coaster ride of awesome cinematography, action sequences that make you gasp, and a hilarious sex scene that involves way too many tourists in Chinatown. Per one film critic, "Merrily refusing to compromise on any level, filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor rocket through this thriller with so much energy and personality that we just hang on for the ride. And it's so much fun we don't want it to end."

Crank Movie Stills: Jason Statham, Dwight Yoakam, Efren Ramirez, Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor

9.11

  • Sep. 11th, 2006 at 9:48 PM

As I sat at my desk this afternoon, I spent a lot of time staring out the window and watching the rain fall from the sky. I thought the weather was appropriate for my mood, one that was quiet, contemplative, and appropriate for the day. Nature in mourning if you will.

In the five years since 9/11, I am  a little older, I have a different job, a different apartment, different friends, and life continues on into whatever is supposed to happen next. I don't write this to stir up controversy or politics. I write this to simply to remember the day, what happened, and how our lives will never quite be the same. To take a moment and realize my very long laundry list of blessings and remember that I am lucky enough to be here. Now. Writing. Typing. Breathing. Living.  Hoping for peace.

In my heart, I am pulling those I love dearly a little bit closer tonight...  A few extra kisses in the morning on the walk to work, an extra "I love you" over the phone to family far away, and a few extra prayers of protection to everyone I care about no matter where they are at this moment.

It is heavy downpour of rain which drenches the soil to fullness; likewise only a profuse shower of love overcome hatred.

This evacuation was sponsored by....

  • Sep. 7th, 2006 at 9:54 PM

This afternoon I took part in an rush-hour evacuation of the West Loop in downtown Chicago. It was part of September's National Preparedness Month as dictated by the good folks at the U.S. Homeland Security Office. The buzz around my office was one of anticipation and curiosity or everyone was excited about the free commerative t-shirts we had received days earlier (white, size XL for all). See pics below. I find it ironic that the evacuation drill had company sponsorship. All participants also received an evacuation back pack complete with an emergency check list and a handout explaining what post traumatic stress disorder is all about.

The air of calm during the drill stuck with me--people seemed so casual and carefree like it was a grade school firedrill. My coworkers cracked jokes and other Loop workers waved and laughed to one another while walking to the City Check In stations. While it IS so important to know what to do in case of an emergency and know that the City is (hopefully) prepared to take on (god fobid) chaos, I don't think I walked away with an added sense of security; rather just another t-shirt to add to my collection.
